We are only a couple of months into the new Italian football season and already there is talk of one of the big clubs sacking their manager.
AC Milan’s Vincenzo Montella has come under increased pressure this week following the defeat at Sampdoria last weekend. The former Italian international striker has found himself in a position where he must win this weekend or face further questions regarding his position.
The opposition at the San Siro could not be much tougher as Roma roll into town. Much like Milan, they are looking to keep pace with the early leaders and with a game in hand, a win here could see them move clear of AC Milan.
AC Milan Form
As mentioned above, AC Milan fell to a 2-0 defeat at Sampdoria last weekend, which was their second loss in Serie A this season. Their previous defeat came at the hands of Lazio in their third game of the Serie A campaign and was a heavy 4-1 loss.
In mid-week, AC Milan played Rijeka at home in the Europa League and were expected to win the match comfortably. Things did not pan out that way and AC Milan allowed a 2-goal lead to slip and they needed a 94th minute winner to take the match 3-2.
AC Milan have won their last 4 home Serie A matches, defeating Bologna, Cagliari, Udinese and SPAL. They have won 8 of their last 10 home Serie A games and their last defeat at the San Siro was towards the end of last season.
However, it was a 4-1 reverse at the hands of Roma.
Roma travel to Milan having picked up a crucial 3 points in the Champions League. Having been drawn in the same group as Atletico Madrid and Chelsea, Roma needed to defeat Qarabag and picked up maximum points in a 2-1 away win.
This will be Roma’s third away match in succession and last weekend they beat Benevento 4-0 away from home. They have now won their last 4 matches in a row and have lost just 1 game this season, which was at home to Inter Milan.
Away from home in Serie A, Roma have won their last 9 games in a row and playing away seems to suit them nicely. They have scored 29 goals in those 9 matches, averaging 3.22 goals per game and will fancy testing themselves in the San Siro.
AC Milan will be without Andrea Conti who has a knee injury and have doubts over Luca Antonelli and Gabriel Paletta. Both Davide Calabria and Riccardo Montolivo are back in training and could play some part in the match.
Roma have Luca Pellegrini, Abdullahi Nura and Patrik Schick on the treatment table. Gregoire Defrel, Diego Perotti, Hector Moreno and Emerson are all doubts.
