Newcastle entertained Woodrush in the 1st round of the Midlands Senior Vase.
A poor start saw Newcastle ship two early converted tries. Newcastle then started to get themselves into the game and replied with a brace of tries, first fly half caught his own chip and rounded the full back to score a try and conversion. Winger John Sale then came into the middle of the park and in the confusion scored another converted try. With the half drawing to a close, Newcastle were pushing for a third try deep in Woodrush territory, an intercepted pass from fly-half Evans, saw Woodrush sprint for the try line only for Evans to make two fine tackles on Woodrush’s centre and the support runner, with the Newcastle defence scrambling back into place the danger seemed to be over only for a soft blindside move saw Woodrush score a converted try.
Half time Newcastle 14 Woodrush 21
Woodrush scored two quick tries both converted which looked to have put the tie beyond Newcastle at 14 to 35. Newcastle kept pressing and were rewarded with a Kev Edwards try in the right hand corner but the conversion was missed. Jonno Phillips then got his name on the score sheet with George White adding the conversion.
With the clock ticking down, Newcastle were being frustrated by a tiring Woodrush pack, and from one penalty Evans kicked deep into the Woodrush corner for a Newcastle lineout, from which Woodrush offended again, this time Newcastle opted for the scrum, which was pulled down by the Woodrush prop. Newcastle again opted for the scrum, this time the Newcastle pack drove over the line but the referee did not wait to see if it was grounded and ran under the posts to award a penalty try. After a knock on by Newcastle a Woodrush scrum 10 meters from their own line seemed to be Newcastle’s last chance gone, however Newcastle’s dominant scrum wheeled their opponents for the reset scrum. Newcastle won the ball for it to be killed by Woodrush’s flanker, who gave away the penalty and received a yellow card. Evans slotted the all important penalty to clinch a last gasp victory.
